Participants of the May picnic with Mr Prus, together with the writer and invited music, acting and dance groups and students of local schools, transport themselves to the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The performances of the artists are accompanied by workshops and a fair of traditional and local products. Mr Prus distributes candies, talks with guests, eagerly stands for commemorative photos, takes part in a walk during which the literary charm of Nałęczów is rediscovered.
Each year the event has a slightly different character, but several elements remain the same, such as the participation of pupils of the Bolesław Prus Primary School in Sadury, who lay a wreath at the monument to their Patron and inaugurate artistic performances.
The May picnic is organised by the Bolesław Prus Museum in cooperation with the Society of Friends of Nałęczów and the Nałęczów Cultural Centre. The event is cyclical, so far the inhabitants of Nałęczów and guests could participate in it 19 times. The initiator of the Picnic, the first of which took place in 2000, was Mrs Halina Bukowska, a long-time curator of the Museum. In 2020, the jubilee edition of the event was cancelled for epidemiological reasons, it was replaced by on-line Nałęczów Walks with Mr Prus. Picnic with Mr Prus has a long and rich tradition, as soon as it is possible to organise outdoor events, the Museum will return to discussions that will enable the event to be reactivated. The goal of the picnic is to integrate the local community and promote the Bolesław Prus Museum among patients and tourists.
