The first volume of “Studia i Materiały Lubelskie” was published in 1962. It was a yearly in which not only the employees of the Lublin Museum could publish results of their research, but it was also opened for authors outside of the institution. During its first years, each of the volumes was dedicated to one field (ethnography, history of art); the later tomes (from 1969) contained material from various disciplines connected with museology and preservation of monuments.
Since its 19th volume, “Studia i Materiały Lubelskie” are published in a slightly changed form. The content has been divided into three groups, what simplifies the navigation throughout the journal. In order to reach an audience beyond the recipients from the related environment, the main section in which material oscillating around one topic or problem (and ones connected to it) has been introduced. We hope that the change will attract authors representing various disciplines of the humanities and other sciences. As a museum journal, we will engage both in problems important for museum theory and practice, and in those more loosely-connected with it. The role of the modern museum in culture, or even in the industry of culture, provokes new definitions about the institution and sparks new discussions among the circles enlarged by members of disciplines that never before took part in these debates.
