In 2017, the Minister of Culture and National Heritage transferred a special-purpose subsidy to the Lublin Museum in Lublin for the purchase of the real estate of the Lubomirscy Palace for the purposes of the creation of the planned “Museum of the Eastern Territories of the Former Commonwealth” branch. The decision to create the institution was preceded by requests from numerous circles. A modern exhibition space will be created in the historic walls of the Lubomirscy Palace after 2019. The relationship between the modern perspective and the historic building and area creates a possibility to create the unique character of the Museum. The location of the building in the central part of the city in the area entered in the register of monuments and the immediate vicinity of important institutions and public facilities will influence the attractiveness of the new museum.
The Lublin Museum received the task of establishing the Museum of the Eastern Territories of the Former Commonwealth from the Minister of Culture and National Heritage in 2016. The decision was a response to the needs of many communities, but the initiative was particularly supported by Mrs Elżbieta Kruk and prof. Waldemar Paruch. For this purpose, the Lubomirscy Palace was purchased from the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin. The next step was the establishment of the Scientific Council, which included representatives of the minister, marshal, as well as the most important Polish museums, including the directors of: the Wawel Castle (prof. Jan Ostrowski), the National Museum in Krakow (prof. Andrzej Betlej), representatives of the Lublin scientific community: prof. Paweł Kras, prof. Andrzej Gil, prof. Mirosław Filipowicz. Moreover, an interdisciplinary group of museum professionals was established, consisting of: historians, art historians, ethnographers and archaeologists. In this form the concept of the Museum of the Eastern Territories of the Old Commonwealth has been developed for a period of time.
