Museums are institutions of culture established for the purpose of collecting, researching and taking care of monuments of historical or artistic value. The protection of museum objects and their proper conservation is one of the primary tasks of the National Museum in Lublin. Safe storage and conservation of museum resources in our institution is based on scientific research and experience of conservators.

In the Department of Conservation, we deal with the conservation of exhibits from the Museum collection, which also includes objects from its branches. Depending on the condition of an object and the degree of its damage, we carry out full, partial or protective conservation. Annually, conservation works are carried out on about 1,200 historic objects.

Preventive activities are also undertaken, including supervision of the state of preservation of the exhibits during their storage, display, deposit and transport. As part of conservation prevention, monitoring of microclimatic conditions (temperature, humidity, light intensity and ultraviolet levels) in exhibition halls and museum warehouses is carried out.

The Museum Conservation Workshops are taking part in the Digital Poland Operational Program Project, which aims to digitise the most valuable objects from the museum collection. As part of the project, monuments undergo a conservation inspection and are prepared for the digitisation process.
The principles of conservation protection are constantly improved, supported by scientific research. Conservators improve their qualifications by participating in conferences, trainings, workshops, etc., and cooperate with experts and external institutions.
The first Conservation Workshops at the Museum in Lublin were established in the 1960s. Currently, the Department of Conservation of the National

Museum in Lublin consists of:
– Painting Conservation Workshop,
– Paper Conservation Workshop,
– Ceramics and Metal Conservation Workshop,
– Textile Conservation Workshop (under construction).
