The museum was established in 1976 in connection with the celebration of the 600th anniversary of Kraśnik. Initially, it was located in stylish rooms on the ground floor of the former monastery, but in 1981 it was moved to the replacement rooms at the entrance gate to the monastery courtyard. The fungus and the dampness of the walls in the monastery seat threatened human health and the safety of the collections. After many efforts, we managed to acquire another seat. The Kraśnik County Board donated a building at Piłsudskiego 2A Street to the museum. The museum gained a two-story brick building from the interwar period with a usable area of 313 square meters, more than half of which was intended for exhibitions.
The museum has regional, historical and ethnographic collections, and above all, archaeological monuments known far beyond Kraśnik. Museum of the 24th Cavalry Regiment The Grand Hetman of the Crown Stanisław Żółkiewski, stationed in Kraśnik in the years 1922-1939 – a branch of the Regional Museum, was opened on July 6, 1995, on the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the regiment. The collection was separated from the historical department of the Regional Museum and placed in a new building at ul. J. Piłsudskiego 7.
